Clinicians

JOEY SORENSON

A career journeyman, I arrived at psychotherapy as a vocation after previous stints working in K12 education, politics & media, information technology, and software sales. I specialize in helping young adults and teens find their sense of ‘why’ pertaining to meaning and purpose so that they can live in alignment with their values and find fulfillment in life, work, and love.

I received my master’s degree in counseling from St. Edward’s University and gained clinical experience through internships providing career counseling at Texas State University’s Office of Career Services and psychotherapy at Capital Area Counseling. I have also received training from the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy treating depression and anxiety, as well as basic training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) from Dr. Christie Sprowls, a board-certified instructor by EMDRIA (the EMDR International Association).

My areas of clinical experience include depression and anxiety, men’s issues, trauma, career counseling, life transitions, couples and relationships, spiritual and religious issues, sexual issues, gay and lesbian issues, substance use, stress, burnout, and perfectionism. I especially enjoy working with current or aspiring young professionals and entrepreneurs.

My undergraduate studies at the University of Texas were in history and political philosophy, and I enjoy bringing theories and historical examples from these disciplines to therapy as helpful. Some of my favorite pastimes include weightlifting, watching movies, singing karaoke, discussing and reading about psychology, philosophy, and history, and rooting for the Cowboys and Longhorns.
